Jay spent this hour following up the last one and our discussion with United Progressives. Is this oil issue a issue dems need to stand firm on or is Jay wrong with his disappointment with Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama and Mark Udall? Is there such thing as compromise? What about moral obligations?

As president, Sen. John McCain would provide $39 billion in federal help for oil and gas companies over the next five years, approximately $700 million of which would come from Colorado taxpayers, according to a report released by the Center for American Progress Action Fund. At 7:00 our guest was Ben Furnas research associate at the Center for American Progress and co-author of the report. Read the report at www.americanprogressaction.orgAt 7:20 we played MSNBC's Keith Olbermann's blazing special commentary on John McCain attacking Obama on the war in Iraq. At 7:35 we were joined by Judy Ramsey from United Progressives to talk about an open letter her group sent to Barack Obama. www.unitedprogressives.us

A student group plans to ask University of Colorado regents this week to allow people with handgun permits to carry weapons on campus. Regent Kyle Hybl said he was not sure if they would tackle the issue. The Colorado Springs chapter of the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus argues that gun-free zones on college campuses translate into a ban on self-defense. Today, people other than police cannot bring firearms on campus. A state law passed in 2003 allowed concealed weapons to be carried by permit in most parts of the state, but then-state Attorney General Ken Salazar issued a formal opinion that regents could regulate whether they allow guns on campus. Campus police oppose a change in university guidelines. What's your take on this issue?

We are joined by former Orange County Supervisor Edison Miller who is lashing out at John McCain, saying the presidential candidate falsely fingered him as a turncoat who was "actively aiding the enemy" while the two were imprisoned during the Vietnam War. "He lied about me," said the Irvine resident, who retired as a Marine Corps colonel shortly after the war. "The attacks on my character and integrity are totally without merit or justification. I did stand up and say the war was wrong. I would speak against the war, but I never spoke against my country. And I gave up no secrets." In McCain's book, "Faith of My Fathers," the Republican presidential candidate writes about two "camp rats" who "had lost their faith completely.""They not only stopped resisting but apparently crossed a line no other prisoner I knew had even approached," McCain wrote. "They were collaborators, actively aiding the enemy." While McCain did not name the two in the book, Miller and Walter Eugene Wilber are identified as the POWs in question in a June 15 New York Times story on McCain's 1974 essay about POW traitors. Miller said the newspaper story brought McCain's claims to his attention.Jay then busted open the phones for the topic free portion of the show. We got into Scientology this hour too!

And those who did will be able to pick up their tickets to Obama's Aug. 28 speech beginning Saturday. To clear up the difference between Community Credentials and All Star Credentials our guest is Stepahie Mueller the Colorado communications director for the Obama campaign. www.barackobama.com Our topic of discussion this hour were new numbers being pulled that show that minorities will be the majority in the United States. White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2042, according to new government projections. By 2050, whites will make up 46 percent of the population and blacks will make up 15 percent, a relatively small increase from today. Hispanics, who make up about 15 percent of the population today, will account for 30 percent in 2050, according to the new projections. Does this concern you?

In a split decision, Chief Judge David Sentelle, writing for the majority of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal of Joe and Valerie Wilson"s civil suit against Vice President Cheney, Karl Rove, Scooter Libby and Richard Armitage. The court agreed with the opinion of District Court Judge John Bates that top White House officials cannot be sued for deliberately leaking the identity of covert CIA operative Valerie Wilson to retaliate against Joe Wilson for publishing an op-ed that undermined the Bush administration"s rationale for going to war with Iraq. Our guest is Melanie Sloan, counsel to the Wilsons and executive director at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. www.citizensforethics.org We then went back to open phones.

We were joined by Mark Udall spokesperson Tara Trujillo. The latest smear ad on Mark Udall is being funded by one person: Bob Perry. Who is Bob Perry? He was the man behind the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth. The man who gave over $4 million to lie about John Kerry's honorable service in Vietnam. The man who helped give us 4 more years of George Bush. Now he's dumped $400,000 to try and tear down Mark. Don't let him do it. Fight back against the Swiftboaters today! We cannot afford to let the man behind the Swiftboaters affect this race. He's already given us 4 more years of his Big Oil buddy George Bush's disastrous leadership. And now that we're finally getting change in the White House, he wants to give us 6 years of another Big Oil buddy: Bob Schaffer. http://www.markudall.com/stoptheswiftboaters Jay then opened up the phones for the rest of the show and talked to a real antagonist about Amendment 100 and seizing vehicles for uninsured drivers.

Congresswoman DeGette, the chief architect of the stem cell legislation that President Bush has vetoed twice in the past year, presents a blistering indictment of the Republican positions on sex education, birth control, abortion and embryonic stem cell research, while at the same time issuing a call for clarity and reason in the ongoing debate on issues relating to sex and human reproduction. www.degette.house.gov www.degette.com

Why are there still bitter or upset Clinton supporters who will not back Barack? We also talked about this guy being held in the US for wanting to assassinate President Bush and Barack Obama.

Erin led off the hour with Dr. Meryl Nass. A leading expert on anthrax, Nass knew the government scientist Bruce Ivins who died in an apparent suicide last week. She has a web page and blog at: <http://www.anthraxvaccine.org>. Nass said today: "The Justice Department has failed to provide to the public any shred of evidence that really would link Ivins in any kind of definitive way to this crime. ..."I absolutely cannot come up with a motive, with access and the complicated things that would need to be done if he were a loner doing such an act. And I am struck by the fact that there appears to have been at least two previous people who were pointed to who appear to have been patsies, Steven Hatfill being one and Ayaad Assaad being another." Erin then returned to open phones and took calls on a bevy of issues including Obama's patriotism and the flag on his plane.

Paul has authored and co-authored a number of books on media and politics, worked in electoral campaigns and political consulting, and edited an online magazine. His latest book, co-authored with David Brock, came out in April. It's called Free Ride: John McCain and the Media. Paul also writes a weekly online column for the American Prospect. www.mediamatters.org www.paulwaldman.blogspot.com We then took calls on a variety of subjects to end the show.
The son of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer is apologizing for a series of Internet bumper stickers, including one that says "Slavery gets s--- done," which were posted on his Internet social networking Web site. Nineteen-year-old Justin Schaffer is studying economics at the University of Dayton and had placed the icons on his Facebook.com home page. A photo of the younger Schaffer's Facebook.com home page was taken within the last two days, and an unknown party created a Web site, www.schafferfamilyvalues.com, to display the page publicly. The image with the slavery caption is over a picture of the pyramids and is posted below links to his father's campaign page on the Web site. Justin did issue an apology that included. "The offensive materials directly contradict the values that my parents taught me and are forbidden in my parents' home. My Facebook page is solely my responsibility, and I am saddened that my actions have reflected poorly on my sisters and parents." His father spoke to 9NEWS on the phone after an event in Glenwood Springs Monday evening and said, "My wife and I have initiated a process of firm and severe discipline with our son." Meanwhile Schaffer's campaign manager Dick Wadhams was quoted in a Saturday Rocky Mountain News story about Udall, a congressman from Eldorado Springs, missing the initial vote in Congress on whether to adjourn for the summer. "We're going to shove a bunch of 30-second ads up his a-- on this issue over the course of the campaign," Wadhams said. What do you make of all this?

Erin kicked off this hour talking about how much she despises bicyclists. Why do they think they don't have to obey the same laws that motorists do? We then took calls on changing parties, negative Obama ads and much much more.

There was quite a struggle in Congress this week. The Department of Defense refused to allow the senior civilian in charge of its Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) to testify in Thursday's hearing on sexual assault in the military. Rep. John Tierney, chair of the House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs, angrily dismissed Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Michael Dominguez from the hearing when Dominguez said that he, the DoD chief of legislative affairs and the chief of public affairs, had ordered Dr. Kaye Whitley, chief of SAPRO, to refuse to honor the subpoena issued by the subcommittee for her appearance. Full committee Chairman Henry Waxman called the DoD's decision to prevent Whitley from testifying "ridiculous and indicating DoD is covering something up." It could also place Whitley in contempt of Congress. Rep. Christopher Shays said the DoD's decision was "foolish." What do you make of this. We also talked about Hillary as a VP choice and much much more.

Barack Obama has defended his decision to soften his opposition to offshore drilling for oil in the US, saying he would be willing to compromise to secure bipartisan agreement on an energy plan. He said at the weekend that he continued to believe that "we can"t drill our way out of the problem". But, he added, he was "open" to accepting some things he did not like in order to achieve "a genuine bipartisan compromise" that would include raising fuel efficiency standards and developing alternative energy sources. Are you upset about Obama's stance on this? She also asked about how pinched yu feel in this economy?

It's our weekly media misinformation report with Senior Fellow at Media Matters for America Eric Boehlert. Items today will include Knoxville Church shooters reading list and McCain attack ads. Boehlert is the author of Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush (Free Press, 2006). He worked for five years as a senior writer for Salon.com, where he wrote extensively about media and politics. Prior to that, he worked as a contributing editor for Rolling Stone. www.mediamatters.orgWe then went into open phones but most the talk centered on police finding O'Reilly's, Limbaugh's and Hannity's books in the Knoxville church shooter's home.

On ABC"s This Week, McCain reversed himself and came out in support of Ward Connerly"s attempt to end affirmative action in Arizona. Ten years ago, McCain called a similar ballot initiative "divisive." But back then he wasn"t running for President, trying to appeal to wary conservatives. McCain"s explanation for this flip is that he "doesn"t support quotas." We are joined by Daniella Gibbs Leger, Vice President for Communications at American Progress.
A man who opened fire inside a church, killing two people with a shotgun hidden in a guitar case, was frustrated at being unable to find a job and blamed liberals and gays, police said on Monday. Suspect Jim Adkisson, 58, who was being held on $1 million bond, had previously worked as a mechanical engineer in several states. He described his violent plans in a four-page letter found at his home, which also explained that his age and "liberals and gays" taking jobs had worked against him. Another recent setback was that Adkisson's allotment of government-issued food stamps had been reduced. Where do you think all this stuff comes from? Does the right just demonize the left and creat this hate?

Jay spent a lot of the first hour talking about exercise and whether or not people can actually get high from exercising. We also talked about new ways to exercise that are really not mainstream like fly fishing and walking in a running creek or river. Jay then went into the whole Obama campaign stop in Iraq and McCain ads that are running against Obama's visit. McCain says he will run a fair campaign. Do you think he is? We also talked about Bob Schaffer on oil drilling.

We continued taking calls on a variety of issues including Obama on Meet the Press, GOP and the military, depression, oil drilling and the Knoxville church shooting. Knoxville's police chief says the man accused of a shooting that killed two people at a Tennessee church targeted the congregation because of its liberal social stance. Chief Sterling Owen IV said Monday that police found a letter in Jim D. Adkisson's car. Owen said Adkisson was apparently frustrated over being out of work and had a "stated hatred of the liberal movement." What do you make of this?

Why did it take a full week of protests, pressure, pickets, pullouts by advertiser, and stations dropping the Rand Savage radio program before the mainstream media finally responded to the latest outrage? Is it because they are part of the racket? Our special guest is veteran media critic and Emmy award winner Rory O'Connor. His new book Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio features unsparing profiles of the ten worst conservative radio talkers in America, including Michael Savage, Bill O' Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus and the rest. O'Connor is a documentary filmmaker and co-founder and president of the international media firm Globalvision, Inc, and Board Chair of The Global Center, an affiliated non-profit foundation. He is also Editorial Director of the social news network NewsTrust.net.
Soaring gas prices appear to be influencing Colorado's U.S. Senate race, analysts say, citing a poll released Thursday showing the race between Democrat Mark Udall and Republican Bob Schaffer in a dead heat. The poll shows Udall and Schaffer tied 44-44 percent, compared to a 48-38 percent lead for Udall in June. The poll is jointly run by Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com. "By a 50-39 percent margin, Colorado voters say a candidate's position on energy policy is more important than their position on the war in Iraq," the poll found. A new poll also showed Barack Obama losing ground on McCain. How do you explain this? Does it matter?

He is a journalist whose works have appeared in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, New York, The Village Voice, Worth, Interview, The Los Angeles Times Book Review, Out, The Advocate, The Nation, Cosmopolitan, Premier, The New York Observer, and The Guardian. He has written biographies on Sylvia Plath, James Dean, and J.D. Salinger. From 2001-2003, he co-hosted Batchelor and Alexander on WABC radio. He has been a fellow at the Hoover Institution. Jay spent the first segment talking about Salinger and Dean before getting into McCain.

Barack Obama would more closely examine broadcasters" public-interest obligations, while John McCain would ensure that the government doesn"t take steps to interfere with the Internet"s growth, surrogates for the candidates are suggesting. At a forum Tuesday sponsored by the Minority Media & Telecommunications Council, former FCC Chairman William Kennard, speaking for Obama, and former Assistant Secretary of Commerce John Kneuer, speaking for McCain, offered sharply different views of the Federal Communications Commission"s future under their candidates. Meanwhile, the National Association of Telecommunications Officer & Advisors, the trade group for local regulators, has created a national broadband policy strategy calling for net neutrality and nationwide deployment of advanced deployment of two-way, high-capacity networks. Our special guest is Tim Carr, Campaign Director at Free Press. www.freepress.net www.savetheinternet.com Jay spent the rest of the hour asking folks who they use as their email provider and who is the best. He says he's sick of gmail.

With an advertiser pulling sponsorship and a radio network dropping his program, conservative talk-radio host Michael Savage yesterday sought to recast controversial comments he made last week in which he said autism is "a fraud, a hoax" and that most children with autism are just "brats" who haven"t "been told to cut the act out." Responding to the uproar caused by his comments, Savage said, "I stand by my words," and he lashed out at Media Matters for America, the progressive media watchdog that on Thursday first noted Savage"s controversial remarks. Despite using words such as "dummy,""idiot,""brat,""moron," and "fool" to refer to children with autism, Savage said he was misquoted and taken out of context. Some parents of autistic children have called for Savage's firing after he described autism as a racket last week. Our special guest is Evelyn Ain of Autism United. Her 8-year-old son has been diagnosed with autism. She organized a demonstration Monday outside New York's WOR-AM, which broadcasts Savage. www.autismunited.org

A California man went to extremes on Monday to punish his teenage daughter. He did so by making the 13-year-old stand at the corner of Stine Road and Stockdale Highway in Bakersfield while holding a sign that said she was a liar and disrespected parents. Clayton Delouth said it was a last resort and said his daughter had stolen money and items from him and his wife as well as a neighbor. Delouth said while it wasn't meant to embarrass her, it was and added that the Puritans and judges have done it, "so, why not?" But local psychologist Dean Haddock says that such a punishment will more than likely backfire and the best medicine is to open up the lines of communication between father and child. Is this cruel and unusual or acceptable punishment?

A former state employee claimed Tuesday in a federal lawsuit that top Georgia legislative officials fired her because she said she would come to work dressed as a female as she prepared for a sex-change procedure to transform from man to woman.Vandy Beth Glenn said Tuesday she was illegally fired from her job as a legislative editor for the Georgia General Assembly after she told her boss she was going to live as a woman full time. She said Legislative Counsel Sewell Brumby fired her because the gender transition would make her colleagues feel uncomfortable and would be seen as "immoral" by Georgia legislators. The lawsuit also claims House Speaker Glenn Richardson, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Senate President Pro-Tem Eric Johnson were in on the act. Jay says transgendered people make him uncomfortable. What do you think? We even had a transgendered woman call in!

Political observers say both the likely major party U.S. presidential nominees are in the final phases of picking their vice presidential running mates. Among those considered to still be under Obama's consideration are Sens. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Joseph Biden, D-Del.; former Democratic Senator Sam Nunn; and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. McCain is looking at former GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney; Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist. Our guest is political strategist Rich Masters. Who do you think Obama should run with?

Iraqi insurgents have nearly ceased their once-constant attacks on convoys delivering U.S. supplies for reconstruction projects and equipment for Iraq's security forces, and shipments are at their highest levels since the start of the war. Through June 2008, there were only 93 attacks on about 6,100 logistics convoys carrying supplies ranging from building materials for schools, hospitals and public utilities to weapons for local police, Pentagon data obtained by USA TODAY show. Does this show the surge is working? Was the surge 4 or 5 years too late? Is Iraq improving?

Bishop Kevin Foreman and other members of the Final Harvest Christian Center have filed with the secretary of state to circulate a petition to change Colorado law to allow five minutes for prayer or meditation in public schools. Foreman and supporters need at least 76,000 valid signatures by Aug. 4 to place the issue on the November ballot. The petition is asking for five minutes at the start of each school day to allow students to invoke silent prayers privately or in groups, or have time for personal meditation. Currently, 13 states require such moments of silence in school each day, but students are not required to participate. What's your take on this?
